Unpacking the Universe: The Making of an Exhibition is a documentary series that follows the six-year journey of LACMA’s curators Diana Magaloni and Julia Burtenshaw in researching, developing, and installing The Portable Universe / El Universo en tus Manos. The series allows us to be transparent about how the team facilitated a collaborative process with the Arhuaco community in Colombia and curators at different institutions and kept this spirit of collaboration alive in the way the exhibition was installed.

Among many topics, the documentary features scenes of breathtaking landscapes and archeological sites; conversations with Mamo Camilo Izquierdo and Jaison Perez Villafaña regarding the Arhuaco worldview and how this relates to contemporary social and environmental issues; and behind-the-scenes footage of preparing the exhibition, including new initiatives around museum stewardship of Indigenous works.

John Kerry in conversation with curators Julia Burtenshaw, Diana Magaloni, and the Colombian ambassador to the US.

Kerry was interested in the climate change message and potential sustainability solutions offered by alternative (indigenous) systems of knowledge.

a film that’s just so funny and well-made, the characters are really well-developed and interesting.”
(The Missoulian, Montana, USA)
“A very inspired documentary debut.“
(Financial Times Germany)
“Must see!”
(Berliner Morgenpost)
“absolutely worth watching….an entertaining portrait.“
(Huddle – German Football Magazine)
“You get neither heroes nor myths, neither legends nor warriors, but something much better to see: people. Guys, characters, winners, losers – me and you, so to speak, and all that with a dog-sized little digicam (but the optics of a 35mm movie) and shot by a woman. And she had little to do with football before. A sacrilege? Not at all.”

American Football invades Soccer-Germany… and they’re loving it! Four young amateur football players from Berlin are the main focus of the film. For them, this all-American sport is more than just a hobby and more than just a game. Football gives them guidance in life and a boost to their masculine ego.
“Weekend Warriors” portraits Herbie – the mama’s boy, Tilo – the show-off, Johnny – the young and confused, and Thomas – the thinker, during one football season with the “Berlin Adler”. The film explores in a humorous way how personal goals, moral values and rituals from the football field are applied to real life and vice versa.

From 1912 to 1948, always in the course of the Summer Games, also artists could win Olympic gold medals for a painting, a sculpture, a poem, a piece of music, or an architectural design inspired by sport. The Olympic Art Competitions were held in Stockholm, Antwerp, Paris, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Berlin and London. Athletes and artists – hand in hand – stood in the limelight.
The founder of the latter-day Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, was a passionate and influential Frenchman who believed strongly in the antique greek ideals and wanted to promote them by inspiring artists to reflect about sport, and athletes to express themselves artistically.
The Olympic Art Competitions were held for the last time in London in 1948. However, since 2000 the olympic games feature events, similar to the original art competitions again. “Back to the roots”, back to the unification of body and mind and to Coubertin’s ideals?
Taking this as a point of departure, the film recounts the history of the Olympic Art Competitions against a sport backdrop.
